Project Description
We worked in groups of 5 or 6 people to produce personal narrative non-fiction pieces centered around the question: Where does your power come from? We worked in groups to produce a reading series to take place during the first two weeks of December at The Industry in Chula Vista. The public, HTHCV, and families were invited to attend. The groups were formed around thematic similarities in our writing depending on where our power comes from (for example: family, money, physical power, art, nature, writing, ect.). 2 groups (11 students) performed each night (a total of 5 nights) and we were in charge of producing the show with some professional guidance.
We partnered with the literary nonprofit group So Say We All in order to introduce professional models of narrative writing and reading performances. We were guided through weekly professional workshops, we produced writing, performances and an exhibition worthy of a captive audience. Several professional storytellers visited our classroom and we took field trips to several reading series in San Diego.
We all produced artistic renderings of where our power comes from that were finalized on a painted canvas that were finalized on a painted canvas. Our paintings showcases the biological connection to where our power comes from. These paintings were displayed on the walls of our venue where we performed our writing pieces in tandem with a slide show as our visual component that helped us convey the content and feeling of our writing.

I have been emotionally hurt by people around me in the past. So I decided that I didn’t want to deal with the pain of getting too close with anyone. Because of these past experiences I feel that my power comes from putting up walls around me to keep myself safe from whatever I feel will result in harm. I keep up walls to feel a sense of safety and protection which I think gives me power. A part of the brain called the frontal lobe is where you can make conscious decisions, and in that part is where I built an emotional barrier to protect myself. In my painting there is my brain surrounded by a brick wall that my hands are building. I wanted to show how I’m aware of my conscious decision to be skeptical of people, and of who I choose to trust and rely on.

Biological Root of TPW
The biological root to my power is the Central Nervous System (CNS), The Brain. It was important to learn about the biological root of our power because we should understand what we feel gives us so much power. In order to keep my brain healthy I need to make sure I am mentally and physicaly active as well as making sure I keep a healthy blood pressure and sugar level.
In my painting there is a brain in the center and it shows hands building a wall around my brain.
During the painting process I learned more about the physical characteristics of my biological connection.
I struggled a lot with shading because that is something I’m not completely familiar with especialy while painting.
I am really proud of all the time and effort I put into this whole process and how my final products came out.
